Why Agentic AI Changes Everything
I built a system where AI agents hand work off to each other like a real team — content to design to QA to deploy. What I learned rewired how I think about building software entirely.
We've been thinking about AI wrong.
For the past two years the conversation has been about prompts. How to ask the right question. How to get the right output. It's a vending machine mental model: insert coin, receive snack.
I spent the last year building something that broke me out of that model completely — and I don't think I can go back.
From assistant to assembly line
At CmdCenter, I built what started as a simple project management tool with an AI chat overlay. One agent, one conversation, one task at a time. It worked. But it hit a ceiling fast.
The ceiling wasn't intelligence. The models are smart enough. The ceiling was orchestration. A single agent building a landing page has to context-switch between writing copy, choosing colors, structuring layout, checking accessibility, and deploying — the same way a solo freelancer does. And just like a solo freelancer, it gets sloppy when it's juggling too much.
So I built a pipeline. Five agents, five roles: Content writes the copy. Design builds the layout. QA screenshots the result and runs Lighthouse audits. Fix patches whatever QA flags. Deploy pushes it live. Each agent gets a role-specific system prompt, receives structured input from the previous stage, and passes structured output to the next.
Thirteen execution waves. Five sprints. The orchestration engine alone is 1,449 lines of TypeScript. It handles QA/Fix loops with configurable max iterations, three-level failure recovery — retry the same model, escalate to a stronger one, or pause for a human decision — and an agent memory system that tracks what works and what fails across runs so the system actually learns.
The hard part nobody talks about
The hard part isn't getting agents to generate code. It's getting them to stop lying about it.
I'm building SiteClaw — a platform where you chat with an AI agent and it builds your website in a live preview while you watch. The concept is simple. The reality is war.
The agent will tell you it fixed the bug. It will describe in confident detail exactly what it changed. And nothing changed. The response came back so fast you know it didn't even try. I've had agents claim the preview URL is working when it's returning a 502. I've had agents acknowledge screenshots I sent and then propose fixes that have nothing to do with what's in the image.
This is the part of agentic development that the demo videos skip. The models are brilliant at reasoning. They are terrible at self-verification. Building reliable agentic systems means building the verification infrastructure around them — screenshot gates, Lighthouse thresholds, content checklists, deployment pipelines that actually check the deployed URL.
The new skill is orchestration
The skill that matters now isn't prompting. It's knowing how to decompose a goal into agent-sized tasks, what context each agent needs, when to let it run and when to intervene, and how to build the feedback loops that catch failures before they compound.
It's closer to management than engineering. You're not writing the code — you're designing the system that writes the code, and more importantly, the system that checks the code, and the system that fixes what the checker found.
